Koshi Basin Initiative

With support from the Australian Government, ICIMOD has initiated the Koshi Basin Initiative (KBI) to enhance the regionally coordinated management of the Koshi basin for the improved wellbeing of local communities and sustainable use of ecosystem goods and services. The KBP aims to contribute to inclusive poverty reduction in the Koshi basin by evaluating the range of possible water-related development pathways through evidence-based decision making and basin-wide cooperation considering climate change, hazards, and the provision of sustainable freshwater ecosystem services. The KBP will approach river basin management through a mix of policy-relevant scientific, economic, social, and ecological knowledge and decision support to promote the sustainable use of transboundary water resources and develop ‘win-win’ solutions that can be supported by all countries. Particular focus will be given to issues of gender and inequality and their linkages to drivers of change and river basin management, as well as to the potential of employing incentive-based mechanisms to improve water use efficiency and productivity. 

Working closely with partners in the field, a basin-wide assessment will be conducted  to gather baseline information on basic indicators related to household water demand and use; livelihood, agricultural, and natural resource management strategies; the needs and uses of climate, water, and agricultural-related information; and current risk management and adaptation practices. 



Land cover and its change analysis across Hindu Kush Himalayan region is realized as an urgent need to support diverse issues of environmental conservation. This study presents the first and most complete national land cover database of Koshi basin prepared using public domain Landsat TM data of 2010 and replicable methodology.The study estimated that Koshi basin is covered 19% by forests. The potential use of the data set for basin level sustainable land use planning strategies and meeting several global commitments also highlighted.

Digital polygon dataset of Soil erosivity on Koshi Basin. The dataset is created using Soil maps of Nepal, India and FAO and represents the average long term soil response to the erosive power associated with rainfall and runoff. It shows a measure of the susceptibility of soil particles to detachment and transport by rainfall and runoff.


Koshi Basin Information System

The Koshi Basin Information System (KBIS) provides a platform for collecting various types of data from all available sources, structuring the collected information, and storing the data. This will facilitate data and information sharing as well as data visualization to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and communication among the stakeholders and general users concerned with the Koshi River basin.
