Floods, landslides, avalanches and droughts are increasing in frequency and ferocity across the Hindu Kush Himalayas, and billions in the region routinely breathe air that exceeds safe limits. ICIMOD’s Climate and Environmental Risks strategic group sets out to reduce the human, natural and economic impacts of these risks, many of which are transboundary in both cause and effect. We work by developing knowledge and tools to inform policies and by building the capacities of local and national partners to increase the region’s resilience. We do this by assessing and harmonising approaches to risks related to water, cryosphere and air, promoting regional collaboration on transboundary issues; improving understanding and communication of risks, testing and piloting solutions and building regionally consistent and informed risk management strategies.
