ICIMOD Programmes and Partnerships in India

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is a regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge sharing centre serving eight regional member countries in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan – and based in Kathmandu, Nepal. India is one of the founding member countries along with other seven member states of the HKH. The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) is the nodal Ministry in India and the incumbent secretary formally represents the country on the ICIMOD Board of Governors. For 2018–19, India is also the Chair of the ICIMOD Board.

Through the Strategy and Results Framework 2017, and the Medium Term Action Plan (2018–2022), developed through national consultation processes, ICIMOD aims to scale up and scale out outcomes from the 3rd Medium Term Action Plan (2013–17), while also identifying emerging thrust areas that are of regional significance. It looks forward to diversified partnerships with institutions in its eight member countries, including India, to develop and provide integrated and innovative solutions for addressing the economic, social and physical vulnerabilities of mountain communities, ameliorating environmental impacts and improving the wellbeing of mountain people.

In 2017, ICIMOD had partnerships with more than 50 different organizations in India through six regional programmes in support of ICIMOD’s mission. In summary, ICIMOD had seven strategic and policy partnerships, 12 implementation partnerships, and 14 institutional collaborations. ICIMOD collaborated with 12 additional partners for consultations and knowledge sharing. There are 12 Himalayan University Consortium (HUC) members in India (Details in Annex 1). ICIMOD is continually working towards strengthening the India-ICIMOD partnership, and engaging with policy makers, development practitioners, professionals, researchers and community based organizations with an aim to promote mountain agenda. As an intergovernmental organization, ICIMOD is working towards fostering regional cooperation and promoting “Partnership for Sustainable Mountain Development” in the HKH region.

For collaboration among academic and research institutions, the HUC – an Initiative under ICIMOD’s Regional Programme on Mountain Knowledge and Action Networks (MKAN) – grants membership to academic institutions to promote centres of excellence in key areas of significance to the region.
