Second Workshop on HKH Monitoring and Assessment Programme (HIMAP)

ICIMOD organized the second HIMAP workshop from 4-6 February 2015 in Thimphu, Bhutan. The three-day workshop sought to bring together different scientific and educational institutions, and experts/researchers to debate on issues related to the key drivers of change in the HKH, a remarkably heterogeneous region with a wide range of habitats and ecological conditions, diverse geographical and cultural landscape.

More than 20 experts, social scientists, senior officials from various organizations, development practitioners and senior Fellows attended the workshop. Dr David Molden discussed the framework and progress of HIMAP while Dr Eklabya Sharma revisited the Assessment Chapter Outline. Dr Sharma also presented the key messages of the Food-Energy-Water Nexus workshop held on 15-16 October 2014 at the ICIMOD headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Over the three days, participants engaged in fruitful discussions and interaction, focusing on social, economic and bio-geophysical drivers of change. They talked about the major drivers of change in the HKH region (e.g., climate, migration, energy, infrastructure, road, etc. and their consequences), and identified drivers of change that could be placed in the same category. Participants emphasized that researchers should understand regional policy implications of the scientific findings and then address the challenge of linking science with policy and action. Finally, they suggested focusing on the opportunities to strengthen institutional and cross-border collaboration. Based on these sessions, the chapter outline was further developed. Messages gathered from the workshop will decisively shape the chapter of the book on the comprehensive assessment of the HKH region.
