ICIMOD AT THE ASIA PACIFIC CLIMATE WEEK 2021:

Resilient society through effective scientific knowledge sharing and adaptation capacity building

Virtual Thematic Sessions | Asia Pacific Region

Register Flyer

Background

Integrating climate science with policy and action is key to building a climate resilient society. Hence, there is a need to strengthen climate-related capacity-building for developing countries to deal with the emerging risks and challenges brought about by a changing climate. This webinar will focus on sharing good practices on how science can be used to inform evidence-based strategic planning, and to implement adaptation actions for a climate resilient Asia Pacific region. It will also discuss ways to effectively deliver scientific knowledge and information to end users (individuals and institutions) and strengthen their capacities to use the information and build resilience in multiple sectors. The discussions are expected to bring forward a range of recommendations on future actions.

Neera Shrestha Pradhan, Senior Water and Adaptation Specialist at ICIMOD, will speak on ‘Use of citizen science for flood early warning systems in the transboundary context’, discussing community involvement in generating flood early warning with the help of low-cost technology and the use of social networks for information dissemination. Using the community-based flood early warning system (CBFEWS) at the cross-border level between Nepal and India as an example, Pradhan will discuss how the early warning helps in resilience building and provides crucial lead time for flood preparedness and action.

Objectives
  • Share experiences on the use of scientific knowledge on climate change to inform evidence-based strategic planning and implementation of adaptation actions for climate resilience
  • Discuss ways to interpret scientific knowledge for climate policy and climate actions at both sectoral and field level, and propose recommendations on future actions
