Pakistan

Pakistan, with plains, mountains and plateau, has a diverse, fertile and natural resource-rich terrain. The country is spread over more than 795,000 square kilometers from its Arabian Sea coastline to its borders with Iran, Afghanistan, China and India. The population was 179.2 million people in 2014, which makes it the second most populated country of South Asia. In 2014 Pakistan's GDP was $225.1 billion; GNI per capita was $1,260. Pakistan has faced issues of security in recent years that have greatly reduced its ability to flourish economically. It is a mostly service-based economy, although agriculture is still important. Over 30% of the population lives below the poverty line. A continuing battle with poverty and nutrition is exhibited in the fact that 44% of children under five are stunted. Environmental issues in Pakistan include deforestation, soil erosion, water shortages, and water pollution from raw sewage, industrial waste, and agricultural runoff. Earthquakes are a potential threat to large sections of the country while flooding routinely occurs along the Indus River, especially during monsoon season.
