Background

The Kangchenjunga Landscape Conservation and Development Initiative (KLCDI) in technical collaboration with Institute of Forestry-Tribhuvan University and with the financial support of German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and Austrian Development Agency (ADA) is organising a regional orientation on Long Term Environmental and Socio-Ecological Monitoring (LTESM) 14-18 November 2016 in Pokhara, Nepal.

The objective of the orientation is to strengthen capacity of partner institutions on long-term environmental and socio-ecological monitoring. This will be achieved through the following:

  1. Sharing experiences on long-term monitoring from the region, as well as other transboundary landscapes
  2. Updating on the status of monitoring in the Kangchenjunga Landscape
  3. Standardising procedure among KLCDI partners for long-term monitoring of priority ecosystems in the Kangchenjunga Landscape
  4. Developing action plans for conducting long-term monitoring in the landscape within the next five years.

Expected outputs

Expected outputs from the event are:

  1. Standardised protocols and methodologies for long term environmental and socioecological monitoring of priority ecosystems in the landscapes.
  2. LTESM action plans of respective countries within the landscape.
  3. Timeframe, milestones and mechanisms for collaboration at the landscape level.

Participants

The event is designed specifically for KLCDI team members who will be involved in long-term environmental and socioecological monitoring within the landscape. In addition, team members from other transboundary landscapes are also invited to learn from their experiences and draw on their expertise in specific ecosystem monitoring.

Venue

The workshop will be conducted in Pokhara, Nepal, in technical coordination with the Institute of Forestry (IoF), Tribhuvan University (IoF is also a member of the Himalayan University Consortium – HUC).
