About the webinar

Every year, we celebrate World Environment Day (WED) on 5 June. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues such as air pollution, plastic pollution, food waste, habitat destruction, climate crisis, illicit wildlife trade, unsustainable consumption, and other issues deteriorating our earth.

This year’s theme is “Only One Earth.” The planet earth is the only home, and we are accountable for its wellness and health. The WED in 1972 had the same theme and this slogan is still relevant 50 years later.

To celebrate WED 2022, we are organising a webinar on the topic of waste management. Municipal solid waste management is a key challenge, especially in developing countries where the waste disposal system and waste segregation at source are not regulated. According to the World Bank, the world generates 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33% of it not managed in an environmentally safe manner. The webinar will bring together individuals who are contributing to ‘unburdening the earth of the waste’ we produce.

The theme “Only One Earth” also prompts us to look deeper into nature and explore nature-based solutions. The webinar will link the concept of ecosystem services and investigate some low-cost nature-based solutions to waste management. We hope that the knowledge sharing through the webinar will highlight the importance of living in harmony with nature, making sustainable lifestyle choices, and minimizing waste – recycling and reusing, whenever possible.

Objectives

  • Understand efforts at municipal waste management, with an example from Dhankuta
  • Explore the basics of circular economy and some low-cost solutions
  • Look into nature restoration to maintain ecosystem services
  • Craft and agree on an action pledge to unburden the earth of our waste
