Fieldwork

Monsoon field trip to Langtang Valley, Nepal

Langtang valley

About the fieldwork

Our Cryosphere team will be carrying out regular fieldwork in Langtang, which includes conducting river discharge measurements of the Langtang River, carrying out maintenance work on the Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) and downloading the data gathered in the stations.

River discharge is highest during the monsoon season, making it crucial to quantify the water volume including both discharge and water levels flowing through the river. Understanding the contribution of rainfall, glacier and snowmelt to river flows through increased observations will help researchers interpret and better explain the relationship between discharge and water levels, and identify whether such data is useful for flood and flow forecasting.

Objectives
  • Carry out maintenance and data download of the AWS including regular maintenance in and around the Kyangjing and Yala basecamps
  • Download data from and carry out maintenance (replace batteries) of the four ground surface temperature sensors near Tserko-Ri
  • Download the data from the time-lapse cameras at the Tserko-Ri and Yala basecamps and check their status
  • Conduct discharge measurement of the Langtang River at Ghodatabela
