KDKH annual dialogue 2021

About the annual dialogue

The Koshi River basin, extending across parts of China, Nepal, and India and home to over 40 million people, is prone to extreme weather events and water-induced hazards. The collaborative, member-driven Koshi Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Hub (KDKH), launched in December 2018, aims to promote disaster risk reduction in the basin through regional collaboration among researchers, policy makers, decision makers, and practitioners.

The KDKH Annual Dialogue is a platform for like-minded institutions, stakeholders, researchers, and policy makers to create and capitalize on opportunities to enhance resilience in the Koshi basin. The platform is also used to discuss research findings, good practices, and innovations that could bolster policies and plans for reducing disaster risks at a transboundary level.

Objectives

  • Discuss scalable and gender equality and social inclusion (GESI)-integrated actions for the management of transboundary risks in the basin’s multi-hazard environment.
  • Discuss the standard methodology for identification and prioritization of potentially dangerous glacial lakes (PDGLs) on the basis of physical, social, ecological, and GESI criteria.
  • Explore a way forward for the KDKH and formulation of country chapters.

Expected outcomes

  • Inputs for scalable and GESI-integrated actions for the management of transboundary risks in the Koshi basin’s multi-hazard environment
  • Finalized standard criteria for identification and prioritization of PDGLs
  • Strategic directions to strengthen the KDKH
