Background

The Australian Water Partnership (AWP) and ICIMOD have partnered to strengthen cooperation between Australia and countries of the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region on river basin governance through two initiatives:

  • Elevating river basin governance in the HKH region: This initiative is preparing focused basin reports on three river basins – Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra – to provide recommendations for elevating river basin governance in the HKH.
  • Integrated river basin management (IRBM) training: This initiative is building the capacity of professionals on IRBM to improve understanding of river systems from an integrated perspective and address challenges, especially those related to climate change.

This session aims to highlight the importance of transboundary river basin management through these initiatives and will also include the screening of a short video on integrated river basin management for water, energy, food, and ecosystem security.
