ICIMOD at World Mountain Forum 2016 – ‘Mountains for Our Future’

Background

The World Mountain Forum (WMF) 2016 will take place Mbale, Uganda presenting an opportunity for mountain stakeholders to share past activities experiences in sustainable mountain development (SMD) and to discuss future challenges and opportunities for SMD. Referring to the recommendations made during the last WMF 14 in Peru, conclusions of on-going international policy processes including climate change negotiation and new sustainable development goals (SDGs) will be examined.

Objective

WMF 2016 outcomes are expected to inform the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and guide interventions in mountain areas at local, national and international levels. WMF 2016 will also offer an opportunity for mountain countries to discuss how to effectively implement decisions from climate change negotiations and the post-2015 agenda for sustainable mountain development.

Themes

The 2016 WMF theme is ‘Mountains for our Future’ with the following sub-themes:

  1. Mountains and Climate Change
  2. Mountain Communities and Livelihoods
  3. Mountain Ecosystem Services
  4. Sustainable Mountain Agriculture

ICIMOD at World Mountain Forum 2016

ICIMOD is proud to be part of WMF 2016 as a co-organiser. Eklabya Sharma, Director of Programme Operations at ICIMOD, will lead a four member delegation to the event including senior managers and professionals with relevant thematic expertise from programme and knowledge management and communications. ICIMOD will lead the organisation of the ‘Mountains and Climate Change’ session, and will present a keynote speech providing an overview on global climate concerns with specific focus on the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region.

In addition, ICIMOD will facilitate the session ‘Mountain Communities and Livelihoods’, have an exhibit booth displaying videos and information on climate change impacts, vulnerability, policy measures, adaptation actions with a special focus on mountains, climate change and livelihoods.
