Venue

Date & Time

12 November 2017 to 17 November 2017

Background

The Environment Conservation and Development Forum (ECDF) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) initiated a Himalica pilot project in Sikaicha and Furumbu VDCs and Phungling Municipality of Taplejung, Nepal, July 2015.  The Himalica pilot focuses on improving the value chain and sub-chain of large cardamom with particular consideration given to climate proofing the production system, strengthening market linkages, and diversifying income sources through the promotion of enterprises and value adding activities. The pilot targets 300 households of 12 cardamom producing beneficiary groups located at an elevation ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 m.

The key pilot interventions are to develop packages of practices and to demonstrate climate resilient technologies and practices focusing on climate change adaptation and livelihood improvement. With an objective to reduce risks and diversify livelihood options, the Himalica program in Taplejung is promoting climate resilient practices on large cardamom farming by making adjustments to biophysical resources and technologies along with strengthening market linkages and local institutions.

Objectives

The field visit program is intended to apprise senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture Development, Nepal about the issues and climate resilient interventions (both technologies and practices) on cardamom that are being promoted in the Himalica pilot villages in Taplejung. The field visit has two key objectives: to share successful pilot interventions for further up-scaling, and to receive feedback, suggestions, and guidelines for further adjustments and improvement.

Expected outcomes

It is expected that the field visit program will lead to the following two outcomes: up-scaling of climate resilient practices associated with large cardamom production and marketing in other districts of Nepal, resulting in the revival of old stands (‘old cardamom orchards’) and sustainable production in the long run; and to build the capacity of farmer groups on climate resilient practices and technologies along with access to information.
