National workshop on "Building Resilient Livelihoods: Experiences from the Himalica Programme in Bhutan"

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forest (MoAF) in Bhutan to support the development of rural mountain livelihoods in the context of socio-economic and climate change in Barshong Gewog, Tsirang, Bhutan. These efforts are being made under ICIMOD’s European Union-funded Support to Rural Livelihoods and Climate Change Adaptation in the Himalaya (Himalica) programme.

Since its implementation, Himalica has empowered over 200 rural households in five Chiwogs (electoral precincts) in Barshong Gewog. It also has encouraging results to share in the following areas:

  1. climate resilient vegetables and goat value chains;
  2. reappraisal of the country’s approach to organic agriculture;
  3. poverty and vulnerability assessments;
  4. multi-dimensional assessment of ecosystems and ecosystem services; and
  5. promotion of beekeeping/honey and other enterprises.

The upcoming Himalica national workshop being organized by the Planning and Policy Division, Ministry of Agriculture and Forest, Bhutan and the District Administration, Tsirang, in collaboration with ICIMOD, will share the achievements, progress, experiences, and lessons from Himalica, with relevant stakeholders for mainstreaming and the potential scaling up of innovation solutions in Bhutan.
