STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION WORKSHOP ON

Comprehensive community-led risk assessment and management in Langtang valley

Venue

Institute of Crisis Management Studies (ICMS), Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu, Nepal

Date & Time

08 February 2021

Organizer: ICIMOD, Institute of Crisis Management Studies (ICMS)

Background

In 2019, ICIMOD conducted a study exploring cryosphere-livelihood linkages in Langtang, a high mountain village in Gosaikunda Rural Municipality, Rasuwa district, Nepal. The life and livelihoods of the people in Langtang are closely linked to the glacier, ice, and snow in the region. The region has witnessed glacier retreat, erratic snowfall patterns, and increased incidences of cryosphere related hazards, causing concern among the local inhabitants. The 2015 earthquake also triggered a deadly avalanche that destroyed the village.

In 2020, the Cryosphere Initiative at ICIMOD partnered with Institute of Crisis Management Studies (ICMS) to assess major hazards in the region, and to build disaster and risk management capacity of local communities and relevant stakeholders. This consultative workshop is being organised to share the findings of the assessment with federal and local government agencies, and seek their feedback and support for effective implementation of the project.

Objectives
  • Introduce and share the purpose, objectives, and expected outcomes of the project with federal and local government bodies
  • Consult with stakeholders and receive feedback on the project
  • Identify potential support from the federal and local governmental agencies for effective implementation of the project
