International Mountain Day (IMD) is an opportunity to create and raise greater awareness about the importance of mountains to life, highlight the opportunities and challenges in mountain development, and build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world’s mountains and highlands.
In 2013 we observe the 11th International Mountain Day. The theme for this year’s IMD is ‘"Mountains - Key to a Sustainable Future’". The focus will be on celebrating how mountains are crucial in moving the world towards sustainable economic growth in the context of poverty eradication, and on drawing attention to their generally sustainable and low-emission production models.
The Chinese Committee on International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (CNICIMOD) and the Geographical Society of China (GSC) always attached great importance to mountain development research in the Yangtze River Basin.
In order to celebrate IMD 2013, create a platform for the exchange of mountain development research in the Yangtze River Basin, and to summarize the work of CNICIMOD, the CNICIMOD secretariat and Yangtze River Research Branch of GSC will jointly organize a workshop in Chengdu, Sichuan province, China, from 10 to 14 December, 2013.
