The UNFCC COP 15 in Copenhagen is expected to be a historic event for climate change. The entire world is looking to the meeting with hope and expectation for the signing of an effective global agreement to replace the much discussed and never fully implemented Kyoto Protocol. COP-15 could be a milestone event through which the global community can demonstrate their resolve to address the problem of human-led climatic change and the related issues and impact.
ICIMOD as a regional knowledge development and sharing organisation will be bringing the special issues of climate change and its impact on the people and environment of the Himalayan region to the attention of the world community at this historic gathering. To this end, a strong ICIMOD delegation of senior programme staff led by the Director General, Dr Andreas Schild, will be organising, cohosting, participating in, and supporting a series of events in and around the meeting. ICIMOD is accredited by the UNFCCC as an Inter-Governmental Organisation with Observer Status, and so is also able to observe the main proceedings and negotiations taking place during the Plenary Sessions.
The COP-15 summit is expected to focus its discussion on plans for both mitigation and adaptation. However, whatever is decided in terms of mitigation, the communities in the Himalayas will have to cope with and adapt to the impacts of climate change for many years to come. At the same time, adaptation and mitigation are intricately linked in mountain areas. Thus from ICIMOD’s perspective the most relevant topics are those associated with adaptation and carbon finance issues and mechanisms. Therefore, major highlights of the ICIMOD activities will include an ICIMOD coordinated session on mountains, water, and adaptation on 11th December at the IIED Development and Climate Days, a short speech by Dr Schild at the High-level Roundtable Ministerial session on 15th December, and organisation of a joint ICIMOD-CICERO parallel event on 16th December where the guest speakers are expected to include the honourable Prime Minister of Nepal as the Chief Guest together with Ministers from our major member countries. ICIMOD will also participate in the Summiteers’ Summit to Save the Himalayas event, which is supported by the Government of Nepal, among others through a display of the mobile version of our Himalayas – Changing Landscapes exhibition.
ICIMOD has prepared a package of information and knowledge products to support the ICIMOD team at Copenhagen and to share information on adaptation, carbon finance, and related topics with the wider global community. The following list summarises the major events to which ICIMOD staff will be contributing as well as the products prepared in support, each with a link for easy access and downloading. We hope that these information resources will be useful.

1. ICIMOD Information Booth, 7-18 December 2009 ICIMOD will showcase its work via its publications, posters, CDs and so on from Monday 7 till Friday 18 December 2009 at the Bella Centre. The overall coordinator is Dr Bhaskar S. Karky, Research Fellow, ICIMOD, who will be assisted by Vijay Khadgi and other colleagues and volunteers. Among others, a DVD has been prepared for distribution with a compilation of ICIMOD publications related to climate change.

Brief: This is a presentation on the research findings of the Kyoto project in which ICIMOD is a partner. The event is being organised in collaboration with University of Twente, ITC, CHEA, NTNC, ENDA, and SU. The ICIMOD project is sponsoring Sr. Forest Officials from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and India, among others to learn the outcomes of the KTGAL, build capacity on REDD and attend COP 15.

Brief: The ‘Summiteers Summit to Save the Himalayas’ is an awareness raising programme to draw the attention of the world leaders and the global community gathered at the UNFCCC Conference towards the perils of climate change in the Himalayas. A 27 member strong team of summiteers with several records from Nepal will be led to this event by mountaineering icon Appa Sherpa. Read more www.savehimalayas.org. This event is being organised by the Government of Nepal, Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation (MOFSC), NTNC, WWF, ICIMOD, and Nepali Embassy in Denmark. ICIMOD is supporting the event with the mobile version of the Himalaya – Changing Landscapes and posters of the ‘Climate Change: Voices of Khumbu’s Children’ interschool art and letter writing competitions. An ICIMOD expert will make a scientific presentation to the Summiteers; all members of the ICIMOD delegation will participate in the March on 11 December.

Brief: Session coordinated by Mats Eriksson with ICIMOD colleagues and partners present. Release of the synthesis report, ‘Local Responses to Too Much and Too Little Water in the Greater Himalayan Region’ and screening of two documentary films on Climate Change and Adaptation – the result of a three year pilot assessment in the region, coordinated by ICIMOD, with partners from China, India, Pakistan and Nepal. A joint UNEP-ICIMOD press release will be issued on this occasion.

Brief: Side event organised by the Norwegian Polar Institute to do a more in-depth follow up to the side event organized by the Danish and Norwegian government together with Al Gore on Monday 14 Dec, during which two research reports will be released: one focusing on Greenland and one on snow and ice. ICIMOD will give a 10 min presentation on the impact of climate change on snow, ice and water in the HKH.

Session: Facing the Challenges: Climate change adaptation in the greater Himalayas Brief: Ministerial level speakers will be invited from the countries of the HKH region. Brief: ICIMOD will highlight the findings of the report, ‘Potential for Carbon Finance in the Landuse Sector in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region, a Preliminary Scoping Study’ In this session The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the Terrestrial Carbon Group will present progress and strategies for resolving scientific, institutional and economic challenges to a staged full inclusion of terrestrial carbon in accounting for GHG mitigation, starting with forest emissions and sequestration.
