Workshops

Hydrological knowledge sharing for sustainable hydropower development

The cryosphere is an important component of the water cycle, especially in mountainous countries such as Norway and Nepal. In Nepal, meltwater from seasonal snow cover in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), together with meltwater from glaciers, feeds into rivers and is particularly important during the dry season. This meltwater is vital for hydropower development and production, and monitoring of cryo-hydrological elements is vital for the sustainability of hydropower projects. While glacier monitoring has received much attention, snow monitoring has been overlooked in most parts of the HKH.

Programmes

River Basins and Cryosphere, Cryosphere

Venue

Summit Hotel, Kathmandu, Nepal

Date & Time

05 June 2019 01 January 1970

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) are jointly implementing the second phase of the Snow Accumulation and Melt Process in a Himalayan Watershed (SnowAMP) programme, financed by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kathmandu. In the first phase of the programme, snow and snow melt data were collected and a model application was set up for simulating water resources in the Langtang catchment. The second phase will build on this data and expand the study area to a new geographical site. This phase will also involve harmonization of data collection and presentation of data relevant for hydropower development in Nepal.

NVE and ICIMOD invite relevant stakeholders in the hydropower sector in Nepal to a one-day workshop on 5 June 2019 to present data gathered during the first phase and to receive feedback on meteorological and hydrological data, knowledge, and their application for hydropower development, which could be incorporated in the current programme. The workshop will identify the needs for ground and remote-based monitoring services and explore the necessity of specific data, information, and tools for sustainable hydropower planning and development.
