Cryosphere research expedition to Langtang Valley, Rasuwa

A team from ICIMOD’s Cryosphere Initiative will head to the Langtang Valley and Yala Glacier for field data collection. The expedition is part of a long-term field data collection project carried out in collaboration with Utrecht University, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (Nepal), Kathmandu University, and the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate.

Venue

Yala Glacier, Langtang Valley, Nepal

Date & Time

11 November 2019 to 26 November 2019

Expedition details

  •  Glacier mass balance, Yala Glacier:
  1. Maintain the stake network on the glacier to measure biannual glacier mass balance
  2. Measure snow accumulation, including snow-pit observations with density measurements
  3. Download ground temperature data
  •  Hydro-met fieldwork, Langtang Valley:
  1. Maintain the automatic weather stations, tipping buckets, and temperature loggers
  2. Maintain and improve seasonal snow observations
  3. Maintain and reinstall hydrological stations and measure discharge
  4. Measure biannual surface lowering of debris-covered glaciers with an unmanned aerial vehicle
  5. Obtain samples for black carbon and dust in seasonal snow

The team will also meet and interact with community members in Kyingin to share with them the research activities carried out in the valley.
