About the event

The regional dialogue ‘Nexus thinking in action: IPBES Nexus Assessment 2025 key findings and dialogue for action’, will bring regional experts working in science-policy interface at ministerial levels of the region to share key findings of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Nexus Assessment, with a focus on the interconnections among biodiversity, water, food, and health. The event is hosted by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in a hybrid format, it will provide a platform for scientists, policymakers, practitioners, and community representatives to engage in dialogue on integrated, nexus-based approaches to sustainable development. The event will particularly emphasise the relevance of these insights for the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region, encouraging knowledge exchange, cross-sectoral collaboration, and translation of scientific evidence into practical policy and action.

Objectives:

  1. Present key findings of the IPBES Nexus Assessment: Share the main scientific insights and the summary for policymakers, highlighting interconnections among biodiversity, water, food, and health.
  2. Dialogue on a nexus thinking for integrated decision-making: Dialogue on a shift from sectoral approaches toward integrated nexus-based approaches in policy, planning, and implementation.
  3. Explore regional application in the HKH context: Discuss how nexus approaches can be applied in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region to support sustainable development and cross-sectoral collaboration.

Background

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an intergovernmental body comprising 150 member countries, established in 2012 to strengthen the science-policy interface for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, contributing to long-term human well-being. Its secretariate is located at the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany. Over the years, IPBES has provided policymakers, the private sector, and civil society with scientifically credible and policy-relevant assessments on the state of nature, the pressure it faces, and response options for sustainable development.

In line with this mandate, IPBES conducted a thematic assessment of the interlinkages among biodiversity, water, food and health (also known as the Nexus Assessment) that took three years and involved 165 experts from across disciplines from around the world. It has resulted in a detailed assessment report including a summary for policymakers.

To disseminate the key findings of this landmark assessment and encourage regional dialogue, a sharing event will be held at ICIMOD headquarters in a hybrid mode, both in-person as well as online for regional participation. The event builds on prior engagement, including ICIMOD’s hosting of the IPBES Nexus Assessment third authors’ meeting in February 2024.

Target audience

The meeting is targeted for a diverse group of stakeholders working across the biodiversity-water-food-health nexus. This includes representatives from government agencies, academics, think-tanks, Indigenous Peoples and local communities and researchers contributing scientific and policy-relevant knowledge. It will also involve participants from the international non-governmental organisations (INGOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and civil society organisations engaged in development and environmental work.
