Background

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is collaborating with the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (AIRCAS) to organize the ‘2021 international training workshop on Earth observation for sustainable development in developing countries.’ The training is being organized at the sidelines of the 4th Asia-Oceania Group on Earth Observations (AOGEO) workshop.

The primary objective of the training is to build the capacity of professionals from developing countries in the use of Earth observation applications, disseminate scientific knowledge, and foster exchange of academic experiences. The training contributes towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDG) at the regional level and contributes to SDG 2: Zero hunger, SDG 13: Climate action, and SDG 15: Life on land, in particular.

The AOGEO and the National Remote Sensing Center of China (NRSCC) will be hosting the training, and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the People’s Republic of China will sponsor the training.

The training will also witness the virtual launch of the Regional Centre for Capacity Development (RCCD). The RCCD is the result of a cooperative agreement between the NRSCC, MOST, ICIMOD, and AIRCAS. The centre will work towards supporting capacity building on Earth observation research and analysis on the implementation of the regional SDGs, agriculture and food security, climate change, carbon neutrality, disaster risk reduction, ecosystems, and biodiversity under the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) framework.

Resource persons from ICIMOD will also lead specific sections of the four-day training. The training is being offered to eligible candidates on-site in Beijing, China and online.
