ICIMOD participated in an electric vehicle rally to mark the start of Renewable Energy Week 2013, which was celebrated in Kathmandu by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) 20–26 January. ICIMOD staff accompanied by three REVA electric cars took part in the event. Altogether 17 REVA cars, 2 electric tempos, and 6 electric motorcycles carried the message of promoting large-scale use of renewable energy as the rally wound through the streets of the city.

As a part of the week-long celebration, AEPC organized a two-day expo on renewable energy technologies in collaboration with the private sector and development partners from Nepal working in the renewable and alternative energy sector. The expo included more than 100 stalls related to renewable energy technologies like hydropower, solar energy, bio-gas and wind energy.

Renewable Energy Week 2013 is being celebrated to create awareness about the benefits of renewable energy to encourage its wider use in Nepal and to demonstrate the viability of renewable energy use in minimizing the present energy crisis. The event also aimed to attract private sector investment in the renewable energy sector and sensitize policy makers about the need to implement improved policies related to renewable energy to create an enabling environment.
