A Green Solutions Fair is being organized at the ICIMOD Knowledge Park at Godavari on Saturday, 8 December 2012 to celebrate International Mountain Day (11 December) and ICIMOD Day (5 December). 

With the slogan ‘For Mountains and People’, ICIMOD reaffirms its commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of mountain people living in harmony with the environment through its various programmes and activities. This includes the testing of new technologies and training of communities from around the greater Himalayan region on green solutions at the ICIMOD Knowledge Park. 

With the motto ‘Seeing is Believing’, the ICIMOD Knowledge Park is opening its doors to the public to showcase green technologies and demonstrate sustainable farming practices and other innovative income-generation techniques that have been adopted by communities in the greater Himalayan region. ICIMOD partners, including members of the private sector, will also be on site to share green technologies that they have developed or adopted. 

Highlights 

Knowledge stalls showcasing green solutions and green technology demonstrations

Learn about green, user friendly technologies and eco-friendly practices adopted by ICIMOD partners and private sector participants as well as those promoted at the ICIMOD Knowledge Park, including:
  • Agribusiness technologies
  • Green banking solutions 
  • Solar and wind power products 
  • Medicinal and herbal products
  • Demonstrations of micro-hydro turbines
  • Energy efficient products
  • Green automobile technologies
  • Solar cooking technology
  • Solar charging device
  • Organic fertilizer and pest control solutions
Partners, members of the private sector, and ICIMOD volunteers will be on hand to offer details on these green solutions, with a number of publications for further reference. 

Green marketplace 

At the green marketplace, you will be able to find organic vegetables and fruits, including kiwi, ground apple, and sweet orange. You can also buy briquettes made from paper and other industrial waste, beehive bio-briquettes, and various mountain products like ginger candy, organic tea, and cardamom. 

Eco-friendly Tour 

On the eco-friendly tour of the ICIMOD Knowledge Park at Godavari, you will get a chance to explore a range of activities, including shitake mushroom cultivation, sloping agricultural land technology, kiwi orchards, a water harvesting pond, rainbow trout fish farming, a meteorological station, rural renewable energy technologies (both solar and non-solar), floriculture, an herbal garden, composting techniques, beekeeping, animal husbandry, puxin biogas plant, and swampy wetland areas. The hike starts from the Training Centre and takes about one hour.

Cycle rally for Green Living, Healthy Living

The World Cyclist Foundation Nepal (WCFN), with support from ICIMOD, is organizing a cycle rally to and from the ICIMOD Knowledge Park at Godavari during the Green Solutions Fair on 8 December 2012. One-hundred and fifty cycling enthusiasts are expected to participate in the cycle rally, which will be led by Pushkar Shah, World Cyclist, Everest Summiter and President of WCFN. The slogan of the cycle rally, ‘I Cycle for Green Living, Healthy Living’, aims to promote sustainable, green transport as a way to live a healthier life. 

Starting point and time: The cycle rally will start from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) in Bhrikutimandap at 8:40. A short media event will be held at NTB from 8:20-8:40 prior to the rally.

  • Satdobato in front of the Nepal Trust for Nature Conservation office – around 9:30

Youth Corner (Yuva Chautari)

The Youth Corner (Yuva Chautar in Nepali) is an ICIMOD initiative to dedicate a space for youth to showcase their potentials and interact with visitors during major events. ICIMOD Youth Corners are organized in recognition of the potential role that young people can play in promoting sustainable mountain development. To inform, empower, and involve youth from the region in the development process, ICIMOD has implemented more than 50 major events dedicated to youth engagement since the launch of the Youth for Sustainable Mountain Development (Y4SMD) initiative in August 2009. These activities include global, regional and national youth forums, capacity building workshops, climate cafes, talk shows, earth debate, special panels at international events, and poster and drawing competitions, among others. 

Mountain Quiz

Test your knowledge on mountains and mountain-related issues with interesting and thought-provoking trivia! Interesting prizes await the Quiz Wiz! The questions will be based on information about the Himalayas of Nepal, mountains of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, mountain biodiversity, mountain cultures, ICIMOD, and mountain-related issues, with a focus on the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.

Documentary Show

Come watch interesting and captivating documentaries relating to mountains; people and their livelihood options; impacts of climate change; and green solutions.

Children’s Corner 

To attract children make their visit interesting, exciting, at the same time educational, a host of activities have been lined up. There will be magic shows, dressed-up animals to greet children, face painting, a drawing competition, and stimulating games. The major highlight will be an on-the-spot art competition from 12:00 to 13:00, and the winners will be awarded with some attractive prizes at 15:15.

Visual art exhibition on upcycled waste material from Everest

The exhibition will showcase sculptures and artifacts created out of waste collected from Mt Everest. The art pieces are the results of a month-long symposium conducted by Da Mind Tree – an organization in Nepal specialized in art activities, event management, and research – with 15 visual artists and 5 guest artists from Nepal.

Food stalls

Four food stalls will have various mountain, indigenous, and western food and some local Godavari specialities available to tickle your taste buds!

Gate prizes

Gate prizes will be given to visitors every half hour as part of a lucky draw. So don’t forget to collect your gate coupon from the Information Booth upon arrival! You may be the next winner!
