16 January 2012: ICIMOD participates in 14th National Earthquake Safety Day Exhibition

The 14th National Earthquake Safety Day was observed in Kathmandu from 16–19 January with various programmes organised by the National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA). The aim was to raise awareness on earthquake risk reduction and preparedness.

An earthquake safety rally was organised from Pulchowk to Jawalakhel on earthquake risk awareness. The Right Honourable Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai then inaugurated an Earthquake Safety Exhibition with 19 stalls, including one from ICIMOD. Our stall focused on a GIS and remote sensing-based Earthquake Emergency Management and Response System (EMRS) for the Kathmandu Valley, which is being developed to support the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) under MoHA. The Prime Minister was briefed on the details by Mr Govinda Joshi and Mr Bikash Dangol and showed a keen interest in the system.
