18 April: Pakistan ICIMOD Day

The mid-term external review of ICIMOD undertaken in 2010 recommended that ICIMOD strengthen its communication and engagement with national stakeholders in its member countries to develop stronger commitment and ownership. Consequently, ICIMOD has organised special days in each member country to take stock of the ongoing collaboration and identify future strategic areas for cooperation in the context of ICIMOD’s future Medium Term Action Plan.

Pakistan ICIMOD Day was organised on 18 April 2011 by ICIMOD and its nodal agency, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Some 137 persons representing 40 institutions (government organisations, NGOs, and media) participated. Among them were Mr Shafqat Hussain Naghmi, Secretary of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Major General (Retired) Ahmad Bilal, Chairman of the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, Dr Amir Muhammad, Rector of FAST University, Mr Asjad Imtiaz Ali, Chairman of the Federal Flood Commission, Chaudhry Irshad Ahmad, General Manager of Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), and Dr Arif Mahmood, Director General of the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

Cryosphere monitoring, climate change and its impacts on hydro-meteorology, biodiversity and the livelihoods of mountain communities, and adaptation measures clearly emerged as priority areas for future collaboration with national partners.
