1–5 May: Participation in ‘Planning meeting on sub-regional capacity building for implementation of PoWPA’, Isle of Vilm, Germany


The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Global Programme on Protected Areas, organised a ‘Planning meeting for sub-regional capacity building for implementation of the PoWPA’ to support of implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA). The main objective of the meeting was to develop a strategy for the capacity building of regional parties to implement the PoWPA. Twenty-eight participants from global organisations, parties to the CBD, and conservation professionals, including indigenous community representative from all over the world, gathered on Island of Vilm, Germany from 1 to 6 May 2011 to discuss various aspects of the PoWPA including strategic plans for capacity development at the sub-regional levels. 

The CBD Secretariat identified ICIMOD as a regional partner to co-organise a regional training workshop for South and South East Asian Parties to the CBD on Capacity Building for Implementation of PoWPA together with ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity and Wildlife Institute of India, which is tentatively scheduled for December 2011 at the Wildlife Institute of India.
