Hindu Kush Himalaya Under Pressure: Climate, Hunger, Migration (Celebrating International Mountain Day 2017)

The world has been celebrating International Mountain Day (IMD) on 11 December every year since 2003. Mountains around the world are coming under increasing pressure from a variety of sources. In many countries, pressures are largely from population growth and increasing use of marginal land and migration. Mountains are under pressure due to climate change. It is widely accepted that humans will face several challenges in the future as a result. Mountain ecosystems and their inhabitants are among the most vulnerable to climate change.

IMD presents an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints related to mountain development, and to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world’s mountains and highlands. The theme this year is ‘Mountains Under Pressure: Climate, Hunger and Migration’.
