SANDEE@25
The book, Reflections, lessons, and memories of collective growth, celebrates the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics’ remarkable 25-year journey of learning, collaboration, and impact. Bringing together reflections from founders, alumni, advisors, and partners, this commemorative volume captures how SANDEE grew from a bold idea into one of the region’s most influential networks in environmental and development economics. Through its unique model of rigorous research support, dedicated mentoring, and deep academic engagement, SANDEE has nurtured generations of scholars, strengthened university teaching, and informed evidence-based policies across South Asia and the Hindu Kush Himalaya. This publication stands as a tribute to the people, ideas, and partnerships that have shaped SANDEE’s legacy—and continue to inspire its future.

In celebration of its 25 years of service to the region, SANDEE organised the ‘International Conference on Development and Environmental Economics: SANDEE@25’. The conference was organised under the theme, ‘development, environment, and mountains’ with the key areas being biodiversity, climate, ecosystems, environmental pollution, forest restoration, livelihoods, and mountains and people. South Asia, in general, and the HKH region, in particular, faces escalating and severe impacts from climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. In this context, socio-economic challenges, including inequality, poverty, unemployment, population growth, rapid urbanisation, and land use changes, are among the most pressing issues. At the conference, leading researchers from the HKH region and beyond shared their insights to aid governments, policymakers, and communities in understanding and addressing these pressing challenges.
