ICIMOD at the Eleventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD COP 11)

ICIMOD’s biodiversity conservation and management framework revolves around the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. One hundred and ninety-three countries are party to the Convention, including ICIMOD’s eight regional member countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. In the upcoming Eleventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the CBD, ICIMOD has planned a series of events and activities to share and discuss its approaches to biodiversity conservation and management in the region.

Activities at COP 11

ICIMOD activities at COP 11 include:

  1. Contributions to relevant plenary sessions including those related to biodiversity and climate change, the biodiversity of inland waters, and the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit sharing, among others.
  2. The ICIMOD Exhibition Booth (8–19 October 2012) will:
    • share ICIMOD’s biodiversity conservation approaches and initiatives with a global audience through a range of informational materials;
    • showcase traditional knowledge and cultures from the region to demonstrate the linkages between human wellbeing and ecosystem services; and
    • conduct a quiz for children and youth to raise awareness on biodiversity issues with gifts for winners as well as for other visitors.
  3. Mega Poster Event where ICIMOD will showcase its work on meeting three objectives of CBD with special emphasis on development and poverty reduction strategies in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region.

    The Mega Posters, displayed on Level 1 of the Gallery at the Hyderabad International Convention Center for the duration of COP 11, have an interactive and participative space; all COP 11 participants have the opportunity to leave comments and to vote for their favourite Mega Poster using Twitter, Post-it notes, and stickers.

    Please register to join us at the Novotel Club, in the Novotel Hyderabad Convention Center, from 6:30-8:00pm on 16 October. The “Jury’s Choice Award” and the “Public’s Choice Award” will be awarded during this evening, however the most important objective of the reception is to communicate the tremendous efforts being carried out all over the world.

  4. CEPA Fair 2012: ICIMOD will also be present during the Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) Fair 2012 to communicate its work through the exhibition and distribution of informational and promotional materials, with a special focus on efforts in the Kailash Sacred Landscape and the initiative to educate school children about the significance and common uses of medicinal plants.

ICIMOD is also jointly organizing side events on:
Side Event 1: Managing Biodiversity in Transboundary Landscapes in the Hindu Kush Himalayas
  • 12 October 2012, Friday, 13:15-14:45, Room 1.01-Level 1This side event, organized in collaboration with G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development and regional partners, will bring together regional and global experts working on transboundary landscapes to share their valuable knowledge and experiences. Objectives of the session include:
    • sharing of experiences and lessons learnt on managing biodiversity through transboundary, ecosystem approaches in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region (e.g., Kangchenjunga Landscape, Kailash Sacred Landscape, Brahmaputra-Salween Landscape, and Karakoram-Pamir Landscape);
    • raising awareness about the prospect of regional cooperation in advocating the ecosystem approach at the landscape level for enhancing ecological and socioeconomic resilience; and
    • sharing highlights and lessons learnt in transboundary initiatives for wider sharing and use by national, regional, and global communities.

Side Event 2: Conserving the High Altitude Wetlands of the Hindu Kush Himalayas: Lessons across borders 

  • 11 October 2012, Thursday, 18:15-19:45, Room 1.07-Level 1This side event, organized in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) India, will bring together national and regional experts on high-altitude wetlands to:
    • share experiences and lessons learnt on managing high-altitude wetlands in the HKH region;
    • raise awareness among the international and regional communities about the unique and productive ecosystems; and
    • bring out highlights of various high altitude wetlands initiatives from the HKH region and lessons learnt in the form of publications for wider sharing and use by national, regional, and global communities.
  • Operationalizing Nagoya Protocol in South Asia
