05 June 2017
World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years, it has grown to become a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in more than 100 countries. It also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing the actions of individuals into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet.
WED is an opportunity for everyone to realize that it is our responsibility to care of the earth and to become agents of change. Through decades of WED celebrations, hundreds of thousands of people from countries all over the world and from all sectors of society have participated in individual and organized environmental action.
‘Connecting People to Nature’, the theme for World Environment Day 2017, implores all to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the earth that we share. It is a terrific and crossing theme reflecting the contribution of this connection to the development of environmental protection, environmental awareness, and a sense of responsibility towards the environment and nature.
As in the past years, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will be celebrating WED from 1 to 5 June 2017. ICIMOD has been celebrating the day:
