About the training

ICIMOD is organising a three-day orientation to build the capacities of local resource persons (LRPs) and technical persons (TA) of our implementing partners in climate-resilient agriculture (CRA). Under the Green Resilient Agricultural Productive Ecosystems: Field of Action 2 (GRAPE FA 2), we have identified and mobilised 19 LRPs within each municipality of the working areas. These LRPs consist of lead farmers and young technicians who have demonstrated a strong understanding of CRA practices in the local community. The LRPs are supported by the TAs of the respective cluster. LRPs along with the TAs are support the community learning centres (CLCs) and farmers in pilot villages in implementing and adapting nature-based CRA practices.

The LRPs act as key facilitators and knowledge providers within their respective clusters. They play a crucial role in disseminating information, providing technical guidance, and showcasing practical demonstrations of CRA practices to local farmers. We see LRPs as some of the champions of the community who support the community even after the project ends. Therefore, it is crucial to strengthen their capacities and enhance their effectiveness in promoting CRAs.

Objectives

The main objective of the training is to build the capacities of TAs and LRPs in implementing and promoting CRA technologies.

At the end of this orientation, the TAs and LRPs will be able to:

  • Enhance their knowledge on a range of CRA technologies, including crop diversification, soil conservation, water management, and biological pest management
  • Strengthen their skills in conducting action research and demonstrations, providing technical support, and facilitating knowledge exchange within CLCs and pilot villages

Background

As part of the GRAPE project, ICIMOD is taking the lead in implementing GRAPE Field of Action (FA) 2 – action research – in Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces of Nepal. The focus is on participatory action research and demonstration of climate-resilient agriculture solutions to minimise climate and socio-economic risks and vulnerabilities. The project places great emphasis on gender equality and social inclusion for ensuring green and productive agroecological systems that supports mountain livelihoods and economy.

GRAPE FA 2 focuses on building resilience of agroecosystems through action research and production of knowledge to foster climate-resilient food production and enhance digital access for farmers (to agro-advisories, weather forecasting, and market information services) in selected demonstration sites. The approaches and innovative solutions developed will be scaled by sharing the knowledge and lessons learned and engaging with policymakers and line agencies at the provincial and national levels.
