Join us for screening of Look Down Not Up, a documentary that follows a 2022 trek by scientists and citizen scientists exploring mushrooms in Solukhumbu region, northeastern Nepal. The film focuses on Shiva Devkota, a leading mycologist at National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Nepal and his ongoing efforts to educate indigenous communities about the dangers of mushroom poisoning. Featuring interviews with leading mycologists, (scientists who specialise in the study of fungi) from the United States and environmentalist Karna Sakya, it weaves together scientific research and personal stories.
Filmed across Kathmandu, Sagarmatha National Park, and eastern Nepal, by Alok Siddhi Tuladhar, the documentary is accompanied by an original soundtrack from the classical ensemble Sur Sudha. It also highlights the untapped potential of mushroom tourism in Nepal.
The specific objectives of this event are to:
Mushrooms play a vital role in Himalayan ecosystems and local livelihoods, but they can also be dangerous when misidentified. Every year, mushroom poisoning causes serious health risks in mountain communities, highlighting the need for better awareness and education.
Look Down Not Up showcases these challenges through scientists’ lenses and local experts working together to understand, protect, and promote safe mushroom foraging. The film not only highlights the science behind mushrooms but also explores their cultural significance and potential for sustainable tourism in Nepal.
