Background and objectives

The Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI), a joint initiative coordinated and convened by UNFCCC’s Nairobi work programme (NWP) and UNEP’s Global Adaptation Network (GAN), addresses knowledge barriers that impede the implementation and scaling up of adaptation action in subregions. The LAKI Hindu-Kush Himalayan (HKH) Phase I conducted in 2016, identified a total of 16 priority adaptation knowledge gaps for the sub-region (Annex I). The LAKI co-conveners, NWP and GAN, in collaboration with the LAKI subregional coordinating entity, the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), are now embarking on a LAKI Phase II for the HKH subregion to:

  • Assess the status of addressing the identified 16 priority adaptation knowledge gapS
  • Identify subregional collaboration opportunities
  • Foster subregional cooperation to advance closing adaption knowledge gaps in the HKH subregion, thus, ensuring the pathway from ‘knowledge-to-action’ on adaption

Following the first virtual LAKI HKH Phase II technical meeting held on July 5, 2023, the LAKI coordinating entities have started the process of stocktaking on the status of addressing priority adaptation gaps and identification actions under implementation or planned. The LAKI HKH Phase II also includes a broader consultation process with the aim to further strengthen regional, subregional and national participation, while deepening the engagement of partners in the LAKI HKH subregion.

UNFCCC, UNEP, and ICIMOD are, therefore, pleased to extend this invitation to an in-person event held on August 29 2023, at 14:00–16:30 (Korean Standard Time) at the Songdo Convensia Convention Center, Incheon City, Republic of Korea.

The event has the following objectives:

  • To provide an overview of the LAKI in the HKH subregion and the preliminary results of the ongoing stocktake
  • To inform about the process of how to contribute to the ongoing stocktake process
  • To gather inputs from participants in relation to the identified knowledge gaps
  • To initiate discussions on subregional cooperation to advance closing adaption knowledge gaps

This event is part of ICIMOD’s strategic communication and engagement campaign #HKH2UAE, planned in the run-up to UNFCCC COP28 in 2021.

Where and when will the LAKI HKH Phase II in-person meeting take place?

This LAKI HKH Phase II meeting will be taking place on August 29, 2023 as an 8th APAN Forum pre-forum event under the Korea Global Adaptation Week, held at Songdo Convensia Convention Center, Incheon City, Republic of Korea.

What will happen after the LAKI HKH in-person meeting?

This LAKI HKH consultative meeting will be followed by a virtual meeting in late-September (exact date and time to be announced). The virtual meeting will bring together partners committed to contributing to the LAKI in the HKH to identify and foster collaborative action moving forward.
