Enhancing decentralised renewable energy solutions

About the workshop

Cost-competitive decentralised renewable energy (DRE) solutions, with their modularity and adaptability, provide a unique opportunity to reconcile energy, socio-economic development and climate objectives in Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH). To this end, ICIMOD and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have been collaborating over the years to assess selected economic value chains in the region from an energy perspective, identify the gaps and potential actions for advancing renewable energy (RE) solutions, and understand the techno-economic feasibility of these solutions. One of our key priorities is to strengthen the capacity of value chain actors and enterprises to evaluate investment opportunities in renewable energy, prepare bankable project proposals, and access available financing products.

In this context, we are jointly organizing a workshop to build the capacity of the HKH region in renewable energy finance and business plan development, demonstrate the market opportunity to entrepreneurs and technology provides, and share best practices across countries.

Target audience

The workshop is targeted at key stakeholders working in the region, as well as renewable energy and social enterprises, and renewable energy technology providers. The workshop will also invite participation from other stakeholders, including relevant government nodal agencies in the HKH countries; regional, national and local stakeholders involved in different economic value chains; development partners and financial institutions; and NGOs and philanthropic organizations.

Expected outcomes
  • Catalyse accessible finance for end-users and enterprises by strengthening their capacity to assess investment opportunities in decentralised renewable energy solutions and to prepare bankable project proposals to access funding
  • Support innovation and adaptation processes in the food sector by increasing awareness of energy use, gaps, and opportunities across the selected value chains
  • Support the development of a conducive ecosystem for local and regional technology suppliers for experimentation and innovation, including through platforms for experience and knowledge-sharing
