TRAINING

Basics of data collection and management

Programmes

SG2, AAC

Venue

Agriculture and Forestry University, Chitwan, Nepal

Date & Time

20 June 2023 to 21 June 2023

About the training

In collaboration with Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU), ICIMOD is organising a two-day orientation to building the capacities of the researchers in effective data collection, data entry and data management practices. Under the Green Resilient Agricultural Productive Ecosystems: Field of Action 2 (GRAPE FA 2), we are engaging students and young researchers in collaborative action research to co-create knowledge to build the resilience of agroecosystems.

The researchers will be involved in the implementation of the action research and this orientation will equip them with the required knowledge and skills to effectively carry out research activities. Proper data collection and management skills will also enable easy data sharing with other researchers, promoting a more collaborative and productive research community.

Objectives

The main objective of the training is to build and strengthen the participants’ knowledge of effective data collection, data entry, and data management practices.

At the end of this orientation, participants will be able to:

  • Understand basic research concepts
  • Comprehend the concepts of sampling
  • Create field-appropriate data collection instruments which include the necessary domains and indicators for analysis
  • Proficiently gather data from the field while adhering to the data collection protocol
  • Ensure quality data entry by utilising suitable templates and software
  • Comprehend the fundamental principles of data management

Background

As part of the GRAPE project, ICIMOD is taking the lead in implementing GRAPE Field of Action (FA) 2 – action research – in Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces of Nepal. The focus is on participatory action research and demonstration of proven climate-resilient agriculture solutions to minimise climate and socio-economic risks and vulnerabilities. The project places great emphasis on gender equality and social inclusion for ensuring green and productive agroecological systems that supports mountain livelihoods and economy.

GRAPE FA 2 focuses on building resilience of agroecosystems through action research and production of knowledge to foster climate-resilient food production and enhance digital access for farmers (to agro-advisories, weather forecasting, and market information services) in selected demonstration sites. The approaches and innovative solutions developed will be scaled by sharing the knowledge and lessons learned and engaging with policymakers and line agencies at the provincial and national levels.

A collaboration between ICIMOD and Agriculture and Forestry University has been established to conduct action research in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. The project aims to engage young research faculties and students from AFU, Far Western University (FWU), and Mid-Western University (MWU), as well as selected student researchers who have received the ICIMOD Embrace equity research grant, in both current and future action research endeavours.
