A workshop on approaches and opportunities for integrated modelling in the Koshi River basin was held to share experiences and expertise in hydrological modelling and water resource assessment to guide basin-wide water resources planning and management. During the workshop, jointly organized by ICIMOD and the CSIRO-eWater consortium at ICIMOD headquarters 19–20 March, participants discussed the need for a robust and integrated modelling system based on current knowledge for the Koshi River basin, including information on major elements such as cryosphere, agriculture, water availability, hydropower, livelihood and water-related hazards in the context of climate and environmental change.

By integrating biophysical and socioeconomic components, the modelling system will work to improve understanding of basin dynamics and multiple responses to various drivers of change. Looking forward, a simple water balance model for the Koshi basin is to be developed for demonstration at the next meeting in June 2013.
