Workshop on Model Transfer and Training on Downscaling

The Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region is one of the most dynamic and complex mountain systems in the world. It contains the largest amount of snow and ice found outside the polar regions, including more than 100,000 km2 of glacier cover, and is the source of ten of the largest rivers in Asia. The mountain system – stretching 3,500 km through some of the world's wettest and driest environments, rising vertically 8 km through nearly every life zone on earth and at the geographical centre of the largest and densest concentration of humanity – is recognized as an extremely fragile environment vulnerable to climate change. It is generally agreed that climate change is gradually and powerfully changing the ecological and socioeconomic landscape in HKH region, particularly in relation to water. Recent studies have shown that the HKH region and the downstream areas that depend on its water supply and ecosystem services, including the Indo-Gangetic plain, ‘the grain basket of South Asia’, are particularly vulnerable to climate change.

ICIMOD with partners is implementing the five-year Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP). The programme will carry out applied research covering climate and hydrological modelling, community and gender specific adaptation approaches, and sharing of results with all levels of stakeholders. The programme also brings in other strategic partners and expert organizations active in the area to contribute to enhanced resilience to change, particularly climate change, through improved understanding of vulnerabilities, opportunities, and potentials for adaptation.

There are seven different components with specific outputs within HICAP. As a part of Component 1 (Climate Scenario) and Component 2 (Water Availability and Demand), ICIMOD and partners are working on downscaling and customizing climate scenarios to the region and developing water availability and demand scenarios in the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra basins. In this regard ICIMOD is organizing a workshop on Model Transfer and Training on Downscaling 4–6 March 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The workshop will bring together experts from the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM), Bangladesh; Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India; International Water Management Institute, Pakistan; FutureWater; and ICIMOD.

Workshop objectives:

  • Review the progress made in climate downscaling and hydrological modelling for the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Indus basins 
  • Transfer hydrological models for the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Indus basins and to discuss key findings and lessons from the model run
  • Share downscaled GCM data and provide training on using it for hydrological models
