On a special invitation from NASA through the SERVIR Program, Basanta Shrestha, Regional Progamme Manager of the Mountain Environment Regional Information System (MENRIS) programme at ICIMOD, attended the launch of the 8th series of the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, US on 11 February.

Landsat satellites obtain valuable data and imagery, including repetitive acquisition of high resolution (30 m) multispectral data of the Earth’s surface on a global basis. ICIMOD has used Landsat data for a variety of applications in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, including glacier and glacial lake inventory and mapping, land cover mapping and change assessment, hazard mapping, and biodiversity assessment among others.

“It is privilege to be a part of this historic launch and recognition of continuing efforts and commitment to promote and utilize earth observation for sustainable mountain development”, said Shrestha.
