MODIS Receiver Installed at ICIMOD Headquarters

On January 10, a MODIS receiver and acquisition system were installed on the rooftop of ICIMOD Headquarters with links to a processing facility in the Centre’s central server room and a visualization system housed in the Mountain Environmental Regional Information System (MENRIS) section. The MODIS system was installed under the Cryosphere Monitoring Project, which is supported by the Norwegian Government through the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kathmandu.

With this new receiver, ICIMOD will have direct access to real-time MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data from two NASA scientific research satellites, Terra and Aqua. Each day, two snapshots of the earth’s surface will be delivered to the Centre with the spatial resolution (250 m, 500 m and 1 km) appropriate for national and regional level studies. The MODIS imageries and derivative environmental products made available with this new addition will be used by ICIMOD and its national partners in ICIMOD programmes and initiatives.
