Deputy Director General Highlights Mountain Experiences of Community Forestry and Watershed Management at the Committee on Forestry

During the Committee on Forestry 2012, Dr Madhav Karki, Deputy Director General of ICIMOD, made presentations at side events to highlight the role of community forestry and watershed management for enhancing the role of forests in sustainable development. The first, on the ‘Contribution of Watershed Management in Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation in Asian Mountains’ was presented at a side event organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on 26 September. A second presentation on ‘Forest for People’ was made at a side event hosted by International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO).

Participation in the event, held from 24 to 28 September in conjunction with World Forest Week 2012, resulted in key learning, including the following points:
  • The nexus between forestry and sustainable development, one of the cross-cutting issues considered at the Rio+20 Conference, is now widely recognized.
  • There are growing trends of afforestation and reforestation in countries around the world. For example, Mohammed Hassan Mahmoud, Environment and Forests Minister of Bangladesh, announced plans to increase the country’s forest cover by 20 per cent by 2021 in a keynote speech.
  • The World Forestry Congress in Durban, South Africa in 2015 will be an important opportunity for organizations like ICIMOD to present and share new opportunities and learning on key issues in the forestry sector that can support climate change and sustainable development efforts.
