Training of Trainers in Beekeeping Management and Honey Production in Sikkim, India

On the request of the State Institute of Capacity Building in Sikkim, India, ICIMOD’s Beekeeping Project provided technical support during a week-long training of trainers workshop on beekeeping at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in South Sikkim 23–29 July.

During the workshop, assistant trainers and students were taught the skills necessary to become beekeeping trainers and to strengthen their colony management techniques. They were also shown to improve honey and beeswax quality. The aim of the workshop was to develop a pool of local trainers and trained beekeepers (resource persons) to support the beekeeping programme being implemented by under the institute. The 27 participants in the training consisted of an assistant trainer and one or two trainees from each of the 10 Livelihood Schools at the institute, and three progressive beekeepers from Pendam, East Sikkim. The institute has requested that ICIMOD conduct an advanced training in queen rearing, which has been planned from 1–15 October 2012.
