The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress elected Zhang Xinsheng of China as the new President of IUCN, during the Congress held in Jeju, Republic of Korea. Before closing, the 2012 Congress also approved the IUCN Programme for 2013-2016, adopted several other motions, and adopted the Jeju Declaration on "nature-based solutions."

A new report finds that protected areas are growing in number and coverage of the earth's surface. The First Edition of the Protected Planet Report was compiled through a collaborative effort between the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and released during the fifth World Conservation Congress, on 7 September 2012.

Indonesia’s President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, declared an International Year of the Rhino, starting on June 5 2012. This declaration took place at the request of IUCN. The hope was it would stimulate action for the long-term conservation of the Javan and Sumatran rhinos, but also promote rhino conservation in other range states in both Asia and Africa.
