Together with the Nepal Institute of Development Studies (NIDS), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is organizing this roundtable at its headquarters Kathmandu as part of the Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP). The roundtable will bring together leading experts on migration as well as policy makers from Nepal, to initiate a constructive discussion among the participating institutions on the issues of migration as an adaptation strategy. The aims of the roundtable are to identify emerging practices and lessons with a focus on concrete challenges and solutions as well as clear opportunities for action, with a focus on the potential role of ICIMOD. Therefore, the specific objectives for this roundtable are:

  • to determine how, when, and where migration can be an effective adaptation strategy to environmental change; and
  • to consider the role which national stakeholders should play, singling out initiatives that could be supported to promote the use of migration as an adaptation strategy to environmental change.

Conclusions of this event will feed directly into ICIMOD’s strategy paper on migration as an adaptation strategy, which is due in 2013, and will provide direction to country-specific migration policy analysis to be conducted as a part of HICAP.
