Samden Lama Sherpa joined ICIMOD as Knowledge Park Officer in June 2005. His professional life, over the last 30 years, has been spent in the hills and mountains of Nepal, working on natural resource management.

From 1988–1996, he worked as Forestry Research Officer at Pakhribas Agricultural Research Centre, Dhankuta, with a project funded by ODA-UK. He was responsible for carrying out agroforestry research in the mid-hills of eastern Nepal. From 1996–2000, he served as Forestry Coordinator of the Churia Forestry Development Project (ChFDP-GIZ) in Siraha, Saptari, and Udayapur districts, mainly facilitating District Forest Offices in their implementation of community forestry and promotion of agroforestry in the Churia forest. Prior to joining ICIMOD, he served a Regional Manager of Natural Resources Management Sector Assistance Programme (NARMSAP) funded by Danida in eastern Nepal and was mainly responsible for backstopping planning, budgeting and administration, and monitoring regional and district-level programmes – community forestry, soil conservation, and pro-poor focused income generation activities through NGOs in Community Forestry User Groups. He also worked as Assistant Soil Conservation Officer at the Department of Soil Conservation and Watershed Management from 1998 onwards.

He completed his Master Degree in Rural Agroforestry from the Department of Forest, University of Aberdeen, Scotland UK in 1994. He has participated in courses such as the Tropical Agroforestry course at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK; Project Planning and Monitoring, Danida Fellowship Centre, Copenhagen, Denmark; and Conflict Resource Management, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand.
