Erling Valdemar Holmgren joined ICIMOD in January 2012 as Senior Climate Change Adaptation Specialist. Valdemar is a Swedish national and an ecologist with 25 years of field and institutional experience in natural resource management in Asia and Africa. At ICIMOD, he leads the programme work on adaptation to climate change and is the focal point for the component on vulnerability and adaptation in the Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP). During the 13 years prior to joining ICIMOD, Valdemar was Chief Technical Adviser for the Mekong River Commission Secretariat, working on wetlands in the Lower Mekong basin countries, and for UNDP, working on biodiversity and climate change adaptation projects in Bangladesh, Mongolia, Ethiopia, and Cambodia. He also served as a consultant to ICIMOD on wetland management and the Himalaya Initiative in 2008. Valdemar’s professional interests lie in contributing to the sustainable use of natural resources at field and policy development levels as the means to secure local peoples’ livelihoods, and in the effective dissemination of knowledge related to this. He spends as much time in the field as he can to ‘ground truth’ his work and to pursue his life-long interest in wildlife. He has an M.Sc. in Ecology and an M.Sc.Ed in Biology/Geography, both from Lund University, Sweden.
