Dr Dorothea Stumm joined ICIMOD as a Glaciologist in May 2011. She holds a PhD from the University of Otago, New Zealand, where she studied the mass balance of glaciers in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Before joining ICIMOD, Dr Stumm worked on subglacial erosion for the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste in Switzerland, and for the World Glacier Monitoring Service, where she was involved in initiating a mass balance programme on the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. Dr Stumm obtained her Master's degree in Geography from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and studied for a year at the University of Turku, Finland. During her studies and in the years that followed Dr Stumm worked with geographical information systems, including in the natural hazard division of a reinsurance company, for a Swiss research institute for agroecology, and in land use planning.
