16 March: Honeybee Project Steering Committee Meeting


ICIMOD’s honeybee project held its third Project Steering Committee Meeting on 16 March 2012. The agenda included a proposal for a no-cost extension of the project, final external evaluation, and project plans beyond 2012. A progress report and operational and financial plan for 2012 were presented. Participating were Christian Mazal, Resident Coordinator of the Austrian Coordination Office, Bhutan; and the following ICIMOD staff: Dr Eklabya Sharma, Director of Programme Operations; Dr Giridhar Kinhal, Acting Programme Manager for Sustainable Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction and Team Leader for High Value Products and Value Chains; Dr Ritu Verma, Head of the Gender and Governance Division; and Dr Uma Partap, Project Coordinator. Director General Dr David Molden attended as a permanent invitee. 

Following the Project Steering Committee Meeting, a one-and-a-half day field visit was organized to the project site in Chitwan, Nepal and the office of the partner organization, the Federation of Nepal Beekeepers, to observe the project work in promoting a value chain approach in honey and in addressing issues of beekeeping promotion and honey trade policy. The team was briefed by the past president of the Federation of Nepal Beekeepers, Sanjib Pokhrel, about progress in collaborative activities. The team later visited some commercial beekeepers to see their honey processing and other value addition related work, and a few Apis mellifera apiaries in and around Bharatpur.
