Graced by Her Royal Highness, Princess Euphelma Choden Wangchuck, a Memorandum of Understanding on ‘Promoting Herbal Gardens in Schools’ was signed between the Council for Renewable Natural Resources Research of Bhutan (CoRRB), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Royal Government of Bhutan, and ICIMOD at the inaugural programme of the Youth Forum – Earth Observation: Empowering Youth for Climate Actions in the Himalayas’. The MOU thus launched in Bhutan is an initiative that has already raised awareness on the conservation and uses of medicinal and aromatic plants among youth in 21 schools in Nepal. This initiative, started in 2010 to celebrate International Year of Biodiversity, encouraged schools to establish herbal gardens in schools.

In a symbolic gesture, a herbal kit comprising some basic garden tools was also handed over to the Honourable Lyonpo Dr Pema Gyamtsho, Minister of Agriculture and Forest, Royal Government of Bhutan. A video film on ‘Promoting Herbal Gardens in Schools’ was also screened on this occasion. The programme was well attended by various dignitaries, invited participants, youths, as well as school children from in and around Thimphu.
