Afghan Mapping Initiative for Geospatial Technologies Capacity Building and Training Programme

The training programme is being developed in partnership with USGS and UNESCO as a part of GIS/RS capacity building efforts in Afghanistan especially targeted to Afghan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office (AGCHO). ICIMOD is promoting GIS/RS tools, methods, and approaches for mountain development issues in the Hindu-Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region. ICIMOD has a good track record on GIS/RS capacity building in its member countries and also interfaces with international and regional agencies to bring-in and customise international knowledge and best practices adapted to mountain specific situations, and thereby transfer know-how and technology to national partners. In this project, ICIMOD is partnering with USGS and UNESCO to build the GIS/RS capacity of Afghanistan with the ultimate goal of supporting Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) in the country. The comprehensive capacity building programme for 2010 and 2011 includes developing computer based training materials, imparting training courses on basic GIS/RS and on detailed and advanced RS application in the context of land cover mapping and change analysis. Two on-the-job training events will be carried out to ensure specific skills exist within AGCHO. The activities will also lead to setting up of a metadata node in Afghanistan.
