International Mountain Day Celebrations at ICIMOD


ICIMOD will celebrate International Mountain Day at its headquarters with a half day programme including:

  • A Message from the Director General, ICIMOD, ‘Mountain Forests: Binding Nature, Culture, and Development
  • A Nepali street drama ‘Prakriti Premi’ (Nature Lover) by the Mandapika Art Group
  • Exhibition of school children’s paintings, “Why We Love Our Mountains’, held 26 November 2011
  • A keynote speech, Why and how mountains matter for me? by Mr Rajesh Hamal, Nepalese Film Fraternity
  • A launching event for the World Mountain Forum for Sustainable development (WMF-for-SD), organised by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), which will link celebrations across four continents – Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America – via video conference. The event, on the theme ‘Conserve, Construct and Celebrate Your Mountains’, will include a real-time panel discussion among Asia-Pacific and European experts and mountain communities on the importance of mountains. It will be linked to the International Mountain Day celebrations in Verbier, Switzerland, which marks Day 3 of the Verbier Green Pioneering Summit
  • An award ceremony for the children’s painting competition ‘Why We Love Our Mountains’, held 26 November 2011
  • A newspaper article, ‘Charting the course for mountain forests in the Himalayas’ by Dr Rajan Kotru, ICIMOD to be published on 11 December 2011
